In 2004, the Ottawa Respite Research Study recommended that a short-stay respite care facility be built in Ottawa to serve individuals who were living with early to mid-stage dementia. The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County joined with Perley Health Community of Care and Carefor Health & Community Services to launch that project. In 2007, Guest House became a reality.
Guest House was one of the first such facilities to recognize the need for respite care in early and mid-stage dementia in Canada. It continues to be a leader in the need for respite care, and maintains a strong presence in the community, referred and supported by agencies throughout the home, health and community care network of the Champlain Region.
Guest House was built with individuals with dementia and their families in mind. It is a bungalow with 12 private rooms with common areas and a private secure garden. A stay at Guest House gives the individual with dementia an opportunity to continue daily routines in a safe home-like setting while their caregiver gets time away from day-to-day care. We strive to support individuals with dementia and their families in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
The Guest House is operated and staffed by Carefor Health & Community Services. It is located on the campus of Perley Health Community of Care at 1750 Russell Road, Ottawa.
Guests must have a diagnosis of early to moderate stage Dementia. This means the person still has abilities to:
The program is designed for individuals living with Dementia, who are medically stable, have a valid Ontario Health Card and are currently living in the Champlain region, alone or with a caregiver.
